The Environment, Natural Resources and Planning Portfolio’s Marine and Fisheries Conservation Section is launching a community survey to gather information on the community's perspective regarding the Marine Protected Area (MPA) and its management.

The St Helena Marine Management Plan 2023 – 2028 details the necessary measures to conserve, protect, and restore St Helena’s marine biodiversity and ecosystems while managing its natural resources sustainably for future generations. To evaluate the effectiveness of this plan, the St Helena Government (SHG) monitors key values of the MPA, including social, cultural, and economic aspects. This questionnaire is part of a long-term monitoring program designed to understand current usage of the MPA and its benefits to the local community.

Participants have been selected through random sampling using the phone book to avoid sample bias. Surveys will be conducted over the telephone with participants aged 18 or older. Participation in this survey is voluntary but encouraged.

All provided information will be treated confidentially. Data will be aggregated without identifying individual participants. Any reports generated from this research will not include names or other identifiable information. This confidentiality aims to facilitate an assessment of whether current management measures are effective, allowing SHG to revise actions if necessary based on long-term monitoring results.

The survey is scheduled to commence on August 30, 2024, and will run for three weeks.
