The outgoing European Union (EU) Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Tom Vens, has bid farewell to President Julius Maada Bio. During the meeting, Vens reaffirmed the EU's support for reforms in the United Nations Security Council.
In a statement released on Monday, 19 August 2024, from State House in Freetown, it was noted that Vens expressed his gratitude for the cooperation between the EU and Sierra Leone during his tenure. "I am grateful for the partnership and collaboration we have enjoyed over the years," said Vens.
President Bio acknowledged Vens' contributions and emphasized the importance of continued international support for Sierra Leone's development initiatives. "Your efforts have significantly contributed to our national progress," President Bio remarked.
This farewell comes amid broader discussions on global governance reforms. Recently, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Secretary-General António Guterres praised President Bio's leadership. "His Excellency Dr Julius Maada Bio has shown remarkable leadership," Guterres stated on Tuesday, 13 August 2024.
Additionally, on Monday, 12 August 2024, President Bio inaugurated the Sierra Leone Peacebuilding Art Exhibition at the United Nations. The exhibition aims to highlight Sierra Leone's commitment to peace and stability through artistic expression.
Dr Simeon K. Ehui, Director General of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), who also serves as Regional Director for Africa at IITA, has been actively involved in supporting agricultural development in Sierra Leone.
The series of events underscores Sierra Leone's ongoing engagement with international partners and its role in advocating for significant reforms within global institutions like the United Nations.
