In a significant event, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., officially launched the Global Fund Grant Cycle 7 (GC7) at Monrovia City Hall. The launch represents a commitment to combat HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, which have posed challenges to Liberia's healthcare system.
Addressing a gathering that included the Minister of Health, Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, representatives of NGOs, Global Health Partners, partner governments, foreign diplomats, and guests, President Boakai expressed pride and gratitude for the support from the Global Fund in addressing critical healthcare issues in Liberia.
The GC7 grant totals $117,546,670 and signifies renewed dedication to improving health outcomes in Liberia. The President acknowledged the invaluable partnership with the Global Fund and its role in supporting Liberia's development agenda by contributing to healthcare and assisting in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.
President Boakai highlighted achievements made with previous grants and emphasized the need for continued progress through the GC7 grant. He outlined a comprehensive approach focusing on expanding access to essential health services, increasing availability of life-saving medications, and improving healthcare infrastructure.
He reiterated a commitment to training healthcare professionals and strengthening supply chain management systems for efficient distribution of medications and supplies. Innovative strategies will be employed to reach key populations, reduce stigma around these diseases, and promote community engagement.
Specific interventions include scaling up antiretroviral therapy and HIV testing for high-risk groups; strengthening diagnostic capacity for tuberculosis; and intensifying efforts in malaria prevention particularly for vulnerable populations.
The GC7 grant aims to support resilient health systems with integrated interventions aligned with government policies. This includes strengthening supply chains, laboratory networks, community systems strengthening, health financing systems as well as monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
President Boakai concluded by reaffirming Liberia's commitment to improving healthcare while expressing gratitude to all funding donors of the Global Fund for their indispensable support. The launch marks a milestone under the Sanitation and Healthcare Pillar of Liberia’s ARREST Agenda (Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law Sanitation & Tourism), enhancing healthcare resilience and accessibility across Liberia.
