On May 28, 2024, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Representation in Benin marked its 49th anniversary with a cocktail reception at the Salle Polyvalente of the Palais des Congrès in Cotonou. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic and consular corps accredited to Benin, Beninese authorities, presidents and former presidents of institutions, eminent personalities, and members of the Union of ECOWAS Nationals.

In his address, Ambassador Amadou DIONGUE discussed the challenges of sub-regional integration and highlighted the achievements of ECOWAS over its 49 years. He expressed his hopes for progress amidst ongoing challenges, aligning with the anniversary theme: "Strengthening Regional Unity, Peace and Security." The Resident Representative voiced his belief that unity and integration would lead to prosperity, solidarity, and democracy in West Africa.

Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Mrs. MASSIM-OUALI AFFO Alice, conveyed gratitude on behalf of the Government of Benin for ECOWAS's support towards President Patrice TALON's Government Action Programme (GAP).

As part of the celebration activities for ECOWAS's 49th anniversary, various events were organized. These included the finals of the second edition of the Genius in the Making competition for secondary schools, the first edition of a Public Speaking Competition among four public universities in Benin, and a multi-stakeholder forum involving academics, state institutions, civil society, diplomatic missions, and representatives from certain ECOWAS entities to discuss different perspectives on the state and future of the Community.
