Over recent weeks, a number of individuals in the community have experienced viral infections leading to symptoms such as coughs, colds, headaches, and vomiting. While no specific viruses have been identified on St Helena, there are significant outbreaks of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, SARS CoV19, and rhinovirus (the common cold) currently occurring in the UK. Given the recent influx of arrivals from the UK before Christmas, it is likely that a similar mix of viruses is present.
These viruses can cause a variety of symptoms including blocked or runny noses, sore throats, dry coughs, headaches, and general muscle aches. Fevers may also occur. It is important to note that the same virus can lead to different types and severities of symptoms among different individuals.
