The Health Promotion team has launched its annual "Healthier Me, Healthier You" campaign this January. The program features two main initiatives: Dry January and New Year, New You. These efforts aim to encourage individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles and meet their health objectives.
Dry January is a 31-day challenge where participants abstain from alcohol to refresh their minds and bodies. According to the Health Promotion team, "excessive alcohol use contributes to over 200 health conditions." They highlight that on St Helena, the average alcohol consumption is 18 units per week, surpassing the NHS-recommended limit of 14 units.
The benefits of reducing alcohol intake include improved liver and digestive health, lower blood pressure, reduced cancer risk, better relationships, financial savings, and enhanced work-life balance.
Another initiative under the campaign is "New Year, New You," which focuses on helping individuals quit smoking.
