The Economic Community of West African States recently began a training program for reporters called “Get to Know ECOWAS” that will emphasize the role of the media in reporting the positive impact of ECOWAS integration activities to the citizens of West Africa.

Those involved in ECOWAS believe that this is becoming a matter of increased importance in this day and time.

The training program was organized by the Communication Directorate of the ECOWAS in association with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. The goal is the creation of a group of well-informed media practitioners who would bridge the gap of information and awareness between ECOWAS and the people of West Africa. The idea is that the strategic importance of the media will ensure that ECOWAS milestones are communicated to the people.

ECOWAS Director of Communication Sandra Oulate Fattoh Elleingand welcomed the journalists from West Africa on behalf of Marcel Alain de Souza, president of the ECOWAS Commission. While speaking with the reporters she stressed the importance of having journalists who were better informed about the goings on of ECOWAS and its integration of West Africa, which would create an ECOWAS of the people by the year 2020.
