The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of the Wise recently met regarding the draft Statute

The May 4-5 meeting was organized by the ECOWAS Directorate of Mediation and Facilitation and consisted of experts from member states in Aduja, Nigeria. The German International Development Agency showed its support at the meeting.

Article 20 of the 1999 Protocol Relating to the Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peace-keeping and Security (Mechanism) defines the ECOWAS Council of the Wise as a mediation branch of the ECOWAS Commission. The Council of the Wise was created shortly after the Mechanism was adopted.

Over the years, the Council has engaged in numerous preventative diplomacy capacities, which include serving as special envoys, mediators, heads and members of missions revolving around election fact-finding and observation, as well as other assignments.
