New ECOWAS partnership to focus on mathematics curriuclum development

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a partnership with the African Academy of Science, African Mathematical Union and UNESCO to support the development of mathematics in the region. 

The title of the symposium the collaboration took part in is “Current Research Trends in Mathematical Sciences and Applications,” which was held in Abuja, Nigeria May 17–20.

Hamidou Boly, ECOWAS Commissioner for Education, Science and Culture, was represented during the opening ceremony by Professor Abdoulaye Maga, who said the primary goal of the symposium was to aid in restructuring national and regional policies in regards to mathematics. He also said an effective course for the instruction of mathematical sciences for the overall development of Africa were laid out during discussions at the symposium.

The symposium provided an opportunity for the younger generation of mathematical scientists to intermingle with mathematicians to improve relationships between mentors and mentees.

Professor Adewale Rowland Solarin, CEO of the Nigerian Mathematical Centre, the President of the African Mathematical Union, and UNESCO Chair on Mathematics all said the symposium reviewed networks in Africa and created new ones to work with international partners.
