U.K.'s Genesis Energy launches $190 million power project in Benin

London-based Genesis Energy said on Tuesday that it plans to build a $190 million power project in the Republic of Benin.

‘’Genesis’ team and the government have done a very good job in helping us to achieve the signing of this Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which will help provide every community and village with efficient and sustainable power,” Benin President Thomas Yayi Boni said.

The Genesis initiative will provide Benin with more than 30 percent of its electric power and will begin with a 120MW power plant, which will eventually increase to 360MW. Genesis will be assisted on the project by General Electric, Cummins Co-Gen UK and Engro Corp.

All electricity produced by the project will go to the National Grid of Benin, which is under the umbrella of the Société Beninoise d'Energie Electrique (SBEE). It will be used to power homes and businesses across the nation.

The project will create jobs, and employees will be hired and trained locally.

“This project to provide Benin with reliable, competitive and clean electric power is in line with our Vision of Lighting Up Africa One Community at a time,” Akinwole Omoboriowo II, Genesis' CEO, said.
