U.S. trade mission to sub-Saharan Africa visits Ghana

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Krysta Harden led a delegation of U.S. agribusiness representatives on a recent trade mission to Ghana, co-hosted by Ghana Minister of Food and Agriculture Fifi Kwetey.

The delegation met with Ghanian officials to discuss market conditions and possible U.S.-Ghana business opportunities. The group, representing 25 U.S. agribusinesses, was in Ghana as part of a multi-country tour of sub-Saharan Africa to gauge conditions and meet potential customers, with the hope of boosting U.S. agricultural exports to the region.

Harden also announced a new initiative through the USDA's Food for Progress program that will invest $56 million in Ghana's poultry production supply chain, hoping to increase efficiency and market access for higher-quality product.

“It is not about producing chicken; it is about processing, refrigeration, getting products to the market -- it’s adding value for producers,” Harden said.

The Food for Progress program is part of the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, which helps emerging countries develop their agricultural sectors by donating U.S. agricultural commodities to target countries and allowing the countries to reinvest the sales from those products for their own development needs.
