The Office of the President of Liberia has addressed recent claims about President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr.'s remarks on investment and corruption. The alleged misrepresentations emerged following the President's speech during the 60th anniversary event for Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, and Nimba Counties.
President Boakai delivered his address at Unification Park in Voinjama, Lofa County. He emphasized a strong stance against corruption and called for ethical governance and accountability.
"Contrary to recent claims," the office clarified, "President Boakai’s remarks were not an endorsement of corruption but a clear denunciation of this vice and a call for integrity in public service and judicious use of public resources."
Known for his honesty, President Boakai urged public officials to reject corrupt practices. His statement reinforced his administration's zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and commitment to good governance.
The government highlighted several anti-corruption measures implemented this year. These include audits commissioned by the President in February 2024 targeting key institutions like the Central Bank of Liberia. These audits aim to address financial irregularities from 2018 to 2023.
In July 2024, Central Bank Governor Jolue Aloysius Tarlue was suspended due to unauthorized loans and overspending. Further suspensions followed in October 2024 when senior officials from the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission faced allegations of financial misconduct.
President Boakai also emphasized transparency through public declarations made in August 2024. He warned newly appointed officials that corruption would not be tolerated. Additionally, December 9 was declared "International Anti-Corruption Day" to promote ethical governance nationwide.
The government urges citizens and media outlets to consider President Boakai’s statements accurately, rejecting politically motivated distortions. The administration remains committed to fostering ethical leadership, unity, and inclusive development across Liberia.
