Legal dignitaries and sectoral directorates from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) convened in Dakar, Senegal for their seventh meeting. This event took place from November 25 to 29, 2024, highlighting a shared commitment to address issues related to the convergence of adopted texts and prevent divergences and overlaps.
The Director of Legal Affairs for both institutions emphasized the significance of this joint meeting. The aim is to consolidate efforts from previous meetings held by ECOWAS and UEMOA.
This gathering in Dakar builds on prior meetings held in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2023. These sessions have focused on identifying areas where convergence between the two organizations is necessary.
At the conclusion of this meeting, several outcomes are anticipated:
- Finalization of cooperation agreements between ECOWAS and UEMOA concerning biosecurity and agricultural inputs.
- Preparation of documents for submission to the Heads of institutions for signature.
- Adoption of a modus operandi for exchanging regulatory texts aimed at harmonization.
