ECOWAS has initiated a three-day workshop titled "In-Country Capacity Building Workshop for School Teachers and Educators" in Guinea-Bissau. The event, held from November 13 to 15, 2024, at Dunia Hotel in Bissau, aims to integrate Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) into the school curriculum. This initiative is designed to equip educators with the necessary knowledge and skills to mitigate the effects of natural disasters on communities and schools.

The opening ceremony was attended by ECOWAS Resident Representative in Guinea-Bissau, Ambassador Ngozi Ukaeje, who represented the Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs. His Excellency Jose Carlos Macedo Monteiro, Secretary of State for Public Order in Guinea-Bissau, was also present.

Ambassador Ukaeje highlighted the importance of education in disaster preparedness. She stated that this workshop aligns with ECOWAS’s Vision 2050 of “Peace and Prosperity for All.” The program is funded through ECOWAS's Humanitarian and Social Affairs budget as part of their action plan focused on disaster-related education and technology development. She reaffirmed ECOWAS’s dedication to promoting sustainable development and resilience within the region.

His Excellency Macedo Monteiro commended ECOWAS for its ongoing support in the region. He mentioned the 2022 Post-Flood Response project which provided $670,902 USD to aid Guinea-Bissau's humanitarian efforts. He emphasized the importance of training communities for effective disaster response to reduce risks and improve recovery processes.
