Within the framework of strengthening cooperation and monitoring joint priority programs for 2024-2027, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Kingdom of Spain held a technical working session. This meeting took place on November 5, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria, with participation from both the ECOWAS External Relations Directorate and the Spanish Cooperation Office.

The hybrid session included representatives from various ECOWAS Commission technical agencies such as the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the Centre for Gender Development (CCDG), the ECOWAS Projects and Infrastructure Preparation Unit (PPDU), the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (ARAA), along with the Directorate for Education, Science and Culture.

Participants reviewed actions related to priority areas including rural development, sustainable agri-food systems and food security, access to clean energy, gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, connectivity and infrastructure, inclusive economic development, and institutional strengthening.

Mrs. Laura M. Garcia, Regional Cooperation Adviser in the Department of Cooperation with Sub-Saharan Africa, expressed gratitude for ongoing cooperation activities. She highlighted a visit by a Spanish delegation to the ECOWAS Gender Centre in Dakar as a notable example. Garcia affirmed Spain's commitment to supporting ECOWAS's development efforts based on identified priority program projects.

Mr. Jérôme BOA, Director of External Relations at the ECOWAS Commission, conveyed solidarity with Spain following recent flood-related events. He thanked Spain for its consistent support towards regional development initiatives. BOA urged active participation in finalizing a framework document on priority projects to be implemented by ECOWAS through its agencies.
