The ECOWAS Commission has initiated a training program for personnel of the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (SSMGB). The course, aimed at familiarizing new staff with the ECOWAS Staff Officers Handbook, is being conducted by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) at Azalai-Dunia Hotel in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. It includes 46 participants from both the SSMGB and Guinea-Bissau's Defence and Security Forces.
Maj Gen Richard Addo-Gyane, Commandant of KAIPTC, addressed attendees at the opening ceremony, emphasizing the course's alignment with the Centre’s goal as a designated ECOWAS Training Centre of Excellence for regional peace and security training.
Mr. Carsten Willie from the German Embassy in Guinea-Bissau acknowledged the collaboration between BMZ, ECOWAS Commission, and KAIPTC. He praised ECOWAS's efforts to adapt to evolving conflict trends through capacity building and highlighted Germany's support for regional security.
Her Excellency Ngozi Ukeje, ECOWAS Commission Resident Representative to Guinea-Bissau, expressed gratitude to KAIPTC for their ongoing contributions to regional peace and security initiatives. She stressed the significance of in-mission training courses for establishing a foundation for regional peace operations. She also thanked various contributors including independent experts and those involved with the EPSAO Project for their technical support.
The training is financially supported by both the European Union (EU) and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), facilitated through the GIZ-ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture and Operations (EPSAO) Project.
