The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have begun a consultation process to develop a regional cooperation plan. The meeting was held at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters on March 25, 2025.
Discussions covered various topics such as artificial intelligence, technologies for agricultural development, green energy, climate change, economic cooperation with regional communities, institutional support, good governance, mediation and regional statistics, and support to the private sector.
Mr. Carlos Conde, Head of the Africa and Middle East Division at the OECD, expressed enthusiasm for this new collaborative effort with ECOWAS. He reaffirmed the OECD’s commitment to these areas of collaboration. "He highlighted the importance of addressing common challenges," including climate change and agricultural technologies. Mr. Conde noted that "a coordinated approach is necessary to achieve sustainable development."
Mr. Jérôme Boa, Director of External Relations of the ECOWAS Commission, alongside Mambury Njie, Special Adviser on Economic and Financial Integration and Partnership to the President of ECOWAS Commission, welcomed the OECD delegation in his opening speech. He underlined "the importance of this new partnership" between ECOWAS and OECD.
Mr. Boa also emphasized establishing a framework for cooperation between ECOWAS and OECD that involves all concerned departments.
This consultation process signifies a new era of cooperation between ECOWAS and OECD aimed at promoting economic development and regional integration.
