As ECOWAS celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, the organization's Transport Directorate conducted a four-day mission from February 10 to 14, focusing on improving operations at key joint border posts. The mission targeted the Seme-Krake post between Nigeria and Benin, and the Akanu-Noepe post between Ghana and Togo.

This initiative is part of ECOWAS's broader efforts to support operationalization and enhance compliance with bilateral agreements and procedures at these border posts. These actions align with ECOWAS's strategic objective of facilitating trade and promoting free movement along the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway. During the mission, stakeholders and officials were engaged to discuss objectives, concepts, and standard practices for effective operation.

The assessment covered the current state of the joint border posts (JBPs), evaluated implementation status of recent ministerial resolutions between Nigeria-Niger and Ghana-Togo, reviewed compliance with action plans, assessed equipment functionality, and identified operational challenges.

The Joint Management Committees of both JBPs have called for urgent high-level political support to implement bilateral agreements effectively. This support is deemed crucial for achieving objectives such as reducing border crossing times and costs while enhancing regional integration within ECOWAS.

This project forms part of the Regional Road Transport and Trade Facilitation Program aimed at supporting inter-community trade and cross-border movements.
