Representatives from several key agencies on St Helena have completed the Multi-Agency Gold Incident Command (MAGIC) training program. This initiative aims to enhance their capabilities in managing and responding to major incidents. The program was organized by the International Police Assistance Service (IPAS) and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) through the Integrated Security Fund’s Justice Programme.

The training focused on developing participants' confidence and understanding of their roles as Gold Commanders. It was conducted by Assistant Chief Constable Mark Williams, along with Tony Brown and Graham Ellis from the UK College of Policing MAGIC delivery team. The trainers expressed their appreciation for being invited to St Helena, stating: “It was a great privilege to be invited to St Helena to deliver a MAGIC Course, and to meet with the island’s senior politicians and leaders at an Executive Briefing session.”

During the four-day course, 27 strategic leaders from various emergency and public services participated in training focused on effective management of major incidents with an emphasis on multi-agency cooperation. According to the trainers, “The level of engagement, professionalism and enthusiasm demonstrated by all of the course delegates was something that they should all be extremely proud of.”

Mark Williams noted that this course provided an opportunity for collaboration with local leaders: “This course was a fantastic opportunity to work with the Governor, Ministers, and other public sector leaders in St Helena.” He highlighted how being present on the island helped him understand its unique challenges.

Chief Secretary Susan O’Bey emphasized the importance of such training for St Helena due to its geographical isolation: “The MAGIC course is very relevant to St Helena where multi-agency collaboration in a major incident is hugely important.” She also appreciated the efforts of the trainers and FCDO's support.

The training involved interactive exercises, scenario-based simulations, and expert instruction aimed at equipping participants with skills needed for defining roles during incidents, taking strategic command, planning contingency plans, and understanding legal frameworks.
