Sierra Leone launches national cybersecurity team with ECOWAS support

Freetown, Sierra Leone – On January 14, 2025, Sierra Leone marked a significant milestone in its cybersecurity landscape with the launch of the National Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) and the National Digital Forensics Lab. The event took place at the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NC3) Headquarters.

This initiative is part of Sierra Leone's efforts to enhance its digital security infrastructure and address evolving cyber threats. Minister of Communication Technology and Innovation, Madam Salima Bah, emphasized collaboration and readiness to tackle cybersecurity challenges. She stated her ministry's commitment to working closely with the center for a safer digital environment.

Mr. Sediko Douka, ECOWAS Commissioner of Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalization, represented by Ambassador Harouna Moussa, highlighted the importance of addressing cybercrime as a growing threat in Africa. He noted that the new CSIRT and Digital Forensics Lab are crucial for tackling cyber threats and protecting critical infrastructure.

Sierra Leone's progress in digital transformation was acknowledged, with support from partners such as the European Union, Germany, and the World Bank. The unveiling signifies advancements in cybersecurity capacity building driven by collective vision and leadership.

The event saw attendance from key figures including ministers from Sierra Leone's Communications Technology and Innovation; Information and Civic Education; Inspector General of Police; Chief Justice; ECOWAS delegates; representatives from national security offices; judiciary members; European Union officials; and British High Commission representatives. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort behind this achievement.

ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a resilient digital landscape across the region by promoting innovation, trust, and safety in cyberspace.
