The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held its 65th Ordinary Session in Abuja, Nigeria, on July 7, 2024.
In his welcome address, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, noted that despite challenges facing the region, ECOWAS has recorded several achievements. These include the significant transition of political authority in Senegal and peaceful elections in Togo. Additionally, an agreement for national unity was signed by stakeholders in Sierra Leone during a review mission undertaken by ECOWAS, the United Nations (UN), and the African Union.
"The Community has made significant progress in the areas of trade and trade facilitation, competition as well as payment and settlement systems, industrial standards and quality harmonisation," he added.
H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Nigeria and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, emphasized that a peaceful and secure society is essential for achieving regional potential. President Tinubu stressed the need to counter terrorism and insecurity in the region and encouraged his colleagues to support community counter-terrorism efforts.
The summit also considered reports on the state of the community and other institutional matters. The Authority elected H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its Chairman for another term of one year.
