The African Union (AU) Commission will host a luncheon Sunday to honor all who helped end the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
The event will recognize the roles that different stakeholders played in defeating the epidemic centered around the West African nations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
These stakeholders included the governments and citizens of the affected nations, health workers, the private sector, AU members and partners and the international community. All efforts will be acknowledged with financial contributions and calls to action.
The luncheon will also celebrate the formal end of the African Union Support to the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA) mandate and discuss the importance of achieving proposed health goals laid out in the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations.
Luncheon attendees will include heads of government, senior officials, ASEOWA health workers and those who have contributed to the ASEOWA, such as business personalities and company representatives.
While the World Health Organization declared that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa was over on Jan. 14 -- since all known chains of transmissions had been stopped -- the organization said the countries need to be prepared to deal with flare-ups.
