His Excellency President Adama Barrow met with Leonardo Santos Simao, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, at the State House in Banjul on May 7, 2025. The meeting focused on discussions regarding a new Constitution for The Gambia, as promised by the government.
During their conversation, H.E. Simao urged the Gambian government to maintain dialogue and consultation with political parties, Civil Society Organisations, and the International Community to achieve consensus on the Constitution.
President Barrow addressed concerns about the proposed new Constitution by stating that his government had reviewed the Draft Constitution from 2020 and developed a 2024 version incorporating those reviews. He emphasized that his administration is willing to discuss any specific concerns other stakeholders may have about this draft.
The discussions underscore President Barrow's commitment to his campaign promise of establishing a new Constitution aimed at ensuring stability and rule of law in The Gambia. Additionally, they discussed economic, social, peace, and security issues affecting West Africa.
