The African Forum for Research and Innovation (FARI 2025) commenced in Cotonou, Benin, with a focus on youth, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The event is part of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of ECOWAS and aims to promote the role of science, technology, and innovation in socio-economic development.
Professor Fatou SOW SARR, ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, highlighted the importance of science and innovation for Africa's growth during the opening ceremony. She noted the significant presence of political, scientific, cultural, and sports figures at the event.
H.E. Mrs. Eléonore YAYI LADEKAN, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Benin, emphasized the collaboration between ECOWAS and its Member States to prioritize innovation as a foundation for African sovereignty. Professor SARR also expressed gratitude to Beninese authorities for their support in organizing FARI.
Minister Assan SEYDOU, representing President Patrice TALON of Benin, described FARI 2025 as an embodiment of a new Africa committed to scientific advancements. He announced that over 75 startups from the ECOWAS region would participate in exhibitions over five days.
The inaugural conference was moderated by H.E Lionel ZINSOU on the theme "African Youth, Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Building a Sustainable Future." The first panel discussion addressed government's role in fostering youth empowerment through entrepreneurship.
FARI 2025 will continue with various sessions including one dedicated to Ministers responsible for Science and Education within ECOWAS Member States. The forum will conclude with an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding startups attended by H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission.
