GAVI CEO visits Sierra Leone to discuss immunization efforts with President Bio

The Chief Executive Officer of GAVI, Dr. Sania Nishtar, has led a delegation to meet with Sierra Leone's President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio. This visit was in preparation for the 2025 World Immunization Week being hosted in Sierra Leone. During the meeting, Dr. Nishtar reiterated GAVI's support for the country's immunization efforts.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, expressed his gratitude to President Bio for arranging the meeting. He noted that hosting the World Immunization Week in Freetown was a testament to Sierra Leone's significant contributions to immunization on the continent.

Dr. Nishtar praised the leadership of President Bio and the First Lady, Dr. Fatima Bio, in advancing child health. She highlighted Sierra Leone's achievement in vaccinating children, noting, "I am proud of what Sierra Leone has accomplished. Your Excellency, under your leadership, Sierra Leone is on the world stage on immunization."

Dr. Nishtar assured Sierra Leone of continued support from GAVI, stating, "We will continue to stand by your side. Even in these globally uncertain times, we remain committed to supporting your government and the people of Sierra Leone."

Professor Julio Rakotonitina, Director for Health and Humanitarian Affairs at the African Union, also commended President Bio's contribution to immunization efforts across Africa. He highlighted Sierra Leone's progress under the President’s leadership, which contributes to the continent’s health goals.

President Bio expressed appreciation for the relationship with GAVI, stating, "As a nation, we deeply value our partnership with GAVI. Development cannot be achieved without a strong and inclusive healthcare system." He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring all children in Sierra Leone receive essential vaccines, emphasizing, "This is not just a political statement; it is a commitment rooted in our belief in the dignity and worth of every Sierra Leonean."
