Sierra Leone's UN deputies commit to national advocacy

Mr. Kalilu Totangi and Madam Michaela B. E. Swallow, Deputy Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, have bid farewell to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone as they prepare to assume their roles in New York. Both representatives expressed their commitment to advocating for Sierra Leone's national interests at the United Nations.

During a formal meeting at the State House, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Timothy Musa Kabba introduced the representatives to President Bio. He confirmed that they had received parliamentary approval for their appointments and completed protocol training with the Foreign Service Academy.

Mr. Totangi thanked President Bio for his appointment, pledging to serve the nation's best interests diligently. Similarly, Madam Swallow expressed her gratitude and honor for the opportunity to represent Sierra Leone on an international platform.

Madam Swallow highlighted President Bio's efforts in promoting democracy, peace, development, and enhancing Sierra Leone’s international standing. She emphasized her experience of 17 years at the Bar and various leadership roles within legal associations as preparation for addressing complex legal challenges at the UN.

She assured President Bio of her dedication to advancing issues such as sustainable development, human rights, women's empowerment, global peace, and UN Security Council reform. "I will bring with me the aspirations of our citizens and your vision of a Sierra Leone that is prosperous, progressive, and globally respected," she stated.

President Bio congratulated Mr. Totangi and Madam Swallow on their appointments, expressing confidence in their ability to meet expectations. He offered his support and guidance as they transition into their new responsibilities while acknowledging the work being done by Sierra Leone's Mission in New York.

The President noted that both appointees' professional experiences are vital for their new roles and expressed optimism about their contributions towards Sierra Leone’s objectives at the Security Council.

Prior to these appointments, Mr. Totangi was Chairman of the National Council for Civic Education and Development. Madam Swallow served as President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association and Senior Legal Counsel at the Petroleum Directorate.
