The Regional Validation Meeting of the Draft Regional Report on the State of the Environment and Climate, organized by the Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture through the Directorate of Environment and Natural Resources, commenced in Lomé, Togolese Republic. This event is scheduled from February 25 to 27, 2025.
Attendees include representatives from Member States, regional and international institutions such as UEMOA Commission, AGRHYMET Regional Center, West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), Center for Ecological Monitoring (CSE), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Mano River Union (MRU), Abidjan Convention, ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), as well as representatives from the ECOWAS Commission and its specialized agencies like ARAA and PPDU. Two external consultants are also participating.
The primary aim is to validate the draft report on the state of environment and climate within ECOWAS Member States.
Mr. FOLI-BAZI Katari, Minister of Environment and Forest Resources of Togo, presided over the opening ceremony. He expressed gratitude to ECOWAS for selecting Togo as the host nation. Emphasizing environmental importance due to ongoing profound changes with negative impacts, he highlighted that once validated, this report would offer a scientific basis for managing environmental issues while addressing sustainable development challenges in the region.
His Excellency Mr. Barros Bacar BANJAI, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Togo spoke on behalf of Mrs. Massandjé TOURE-LITSE, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture. He thanked Togo for hosting this meeting while outlining degradation levels in certain environmental areas alongside actions taken by ECOWAS regarding environmental preservation efforts against climate change.
This report represents an initial attempt at providing updated data concerning major environmental trends across Member States along with policy recommendations covering thematic areas such as climate change air quality; land; biodiversity ecosystems; freshwater resources marine coastal environments human settlements waste management derived from national reports submitted by all member states receiving technical financial support notably including Côte d’Ivoire Liberia Gambia Guinea Niger during their preparation stages prior validation publication coinciding fiftieth anniversary celebrations upcoming festivities planned later year ahead
