The ECOWAS Commission, in partnership with the Energy Commission of Nigeria, has launched the Computerised National Energy Information System (CNES) in Abuja. This initiative is part of the broader ECOWAS Energy Information System (ECOWAS-EIS), which was initially introduced in March 2023 during a meeting of ECOWAS energy ministers.
Supported financially by the European Union through the Programme for the Improvement of Governance of the Energy Sector in West Africa, this system aims to provide comprehensive data on energy infrastructure, policies, regulations, and carbon emissions. It serves as an information platform accessible to decision-makers and the public.
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, emphasized that CNES will act as "a repository of reliable energy data," facilitating informed decisions on energy supply and costs. He added that it represents a "computerised infrastructure" designed to enhance data collection and quality.
Prince Adeyemi Adediran, represented by Biyi Fafunmi from the National Bureau of Statistics, delivered a keynote address praising this development. He noted that CNES would enhance national energy security by offering accurate data on production and consumption.
Mr. Sediko Douka from ECOWAS commended both commissions for their collaboration and highlighted the importance of credible regional databases for effective governance in West Africa's energy sector.
Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji stressed Nigeria's need for reliable energy data to guide its transition processes. He mentioned ongoing efforts but called for a holistic approach informed by high-quality data.
The computerized system developed by ECOWAS aims to improve access to reliable data across member states, continuing efforts to harmonize information within the region.
