Mr. Dieu-Donné Alladjodjo, CEO Promo Fruits Benin, shared the challenges faced by his company and the positive impact of their partnership with the USAID West Africa Trade Hub in reviving the citrus sector in Benin. He explained how their collaboration aimed to enhance the quality and quantity of citrus yields, reduce post-harvest losses, and ensure consistent market access through contractual agreements.
Reflecting on the transformation brought about by the partnership, Mr. Klouvi, a citrus farmer in Lalo, expressed, "The training provided by Promo Fruits... has inspired us all to better maintain our plantations." This support has led to significant improvements in yield and income for farmers like Mr. Klouvi, demonstrating the tangible benefits of the initiative.
The intervention by Promo Fruits, with the backing of the Trade Hub funding, has not only boosted individual farmers but also had a broader national impact. The Government of Benin has taken steps to enhance citrus production, including identifying mother plants for grafting stock, organizing the seed sector, and providing training for nursery operators. These efforts have created a favorable environment for citrus farming in the country.
Mr. Dieu-Donné's vision for the future of Promo Fruits includes empowering producers through mechanization, eco-friendly agricultural practices, and increased processing capacity. He emphasized, "Our ultimate goal is to meet the growing demand for a variety of locally produced fruit juices and concentrates, both within the domestic market and internationally."
The strides made by Promo Fruits and its partners signify a promising future for the citrus value chain in Benin. Through collaborative efforts and strategic investments, the sector is on a path towards sustainability and prosperity, benefiting farmers, communities, and the nation as a whole.
