The Presidents of Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of Congo, Téodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and Denis Sassou-Nguesso, have been honored with the Babacar Ndiaye Prize 2024 by the "Africa Road Builders" Selection Committee. President Obiang Nguema was recognized "for his remarkable achievements in improving the road infrastructure in his country," while President Sassou-Nguesso was acknowledged "in recognition of his commitment to the development of road infrastructure."
In Equatorial Guinea, President Obiang Nguema's efforts were highlighted with the completion of significant projects such as the Malabo-Sipopo and Bata-Mongomo motorways, as well as the resurfacing of roads in various regions. Meanwhile, in the Republic of Congo, the committee praised the development of the road between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.
The Selection Committee extended their congratulations to the two presidents and invited them to accept their awards in Nairobi, Kenya, on 30 May 2024, during the final conference alongside the African Development Bank Annual Meetings. The Babacar Ndiaye Prize, sponsored by the African Development Bank Group, recognizes impactful and ambitious projects that enhance mobility in Africa.
Mike Salawou, Director of Infrastructure and Urban Development at the African Development Bank, represented the Bank Group at the ceremony where the winners were announced. The Babacar Ndiaye Prize has been previously awarded to other heads of state, including King Mohamed VI of Morocco, Edgar Lungu of Zambia, Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire, Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon, and others in previous years.
The "Africa Road Builders" Prize, created in honor of Babacar Ndiaye, former President of the African Development Bank Group, continues to recognize and celebrate the impactful contributions of leaders towards improving road infrastructure in Africa.
