President Julius Maada Bio announced the opening of the Sardine Canning Factory of the SABCO Fishing Company in Freetown.

The canning factory is the result of the government’s focus on industrialisation and economic diversification, and their support of private sector efforts.

Mohammed Sabagah, the Managing Director/CEO of SABCO Fishing Company, said that the factory will create jobs for locals in the area and will attract more foreign exchange for the country.

“Harnessing our fisheries wealth through value addition is strategically aligned with our Government’s industrialisation and economic diversification aspirations,” President Bio said in a post on X. “SABCO Fishing Company will provide livelihood and income-generation prospects, particularly for our youth and women in the coastal communities, to improve their quality of life.”

“In the long term, the company will contribute to our Government’s efforts in attaining food and nutrition security, poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability for the current and future generations,” Bio said. “I wish the Management and Staff of SABCO Fishing Company a successful venture and reaffirm our commitment to supporting private sector development as the engine for sustainable economic growth in Sierra Leone.”
