The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Petroleum Producers' Association (APPA) agreed to work together Tuesday as the region moves forward in the development of energy production.
Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, the commissioner of Energy and Mines, Dr. Morlaye Bangoura, spoke at the APPA's Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers event in Abuja, Nigeria, on behalf of the president of ECOWAS. Since its forming in 1975, the commission has been searching for ways to promote stability and economic development for the region.
The achievements of ECOWAS has been the creation of the West Africa Power Pool that creates an electrical interconnection with the production source and the member states, the promotion of renewable energy as well as the popularity that it has gained over the years through the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Center. The West African gas pipeline has also provided a supply of natural gas to various countries.
Some of the needed developments in the future are hydrocarbon supplies for member states as well as oil and gas market developments and the modernization of crude oil valuation tools.
The commission is optimistic about the new agreement between the organizations as the needs are more easily attainable and will help in the development of energy resources and integration regionally.
