His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone, met with the Sierra Leone Labour Congress leadership at the State House today to discuss preparations for International Workers' Day. During the meeting, progress in the labor sector under President Bio's leadership was acknowledged.
The Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, expressed gratitude to the President for engaging with the Labor Congress before the celebration. He noted that this year's event would be unique, focusing on honoring individuals from various work fields. Minister Swaray also informed President Bio about the recently concluded Social Dialogue sessions, set to become a permanent structure.
Mohamed Sallieu Bangura, President of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress, appreciated President Bio's openness and the labor reforms during his administration. He advocated for ongoing cooperation between the government and the Labor Congress.
Max K. Conteh, Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress, highlighted the sector's achievements and the absence of major industrial strikes since President Bio took office. He attributed this to the government’s timely review of labor laws, now considered among the most progressive worldwide.
Conteh revealed that policy changes under President Bio led to Sierra Leone settling its longstanding financial obligations to the International Labour Organization (ILO), restoring the country's voting rights.
President Bio thanked the Labor Congress for their commitment, stressing the importance of dialogue in government-labor relations. He noted the global effects of industrial issues but credited Sierra Leone's proactive approach to maintaining peace and cooperation.
“Dialogue has proven to be an effective tool in our national development efforts,” President Bio stated. “As leaders, we have used constructive engagement to resolve concerns in the best interest of the nation. Getting things right is not a weakness. it is about ensuring that our workers are heard and their welfare is prioritized.”
President Bio confirmed his commitment to the Social Dialogue mechanism and praised the Labour Congress for its patriotism. He concluded by encouraging all Sierra Leoneans to understand the importance of their roles in the nation's development.
