The Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives of ECOWAS Member States held their Annual Retreat in Lagos, Nigeria, from November 29 to 30, 2024. The retreat was organized by the ECOWAS Commission under the theme: “The Future of ECOWAS: Implications of the Withdrawal of Three Member States.” Ambassador Musa Sani Nuhu, Permanent Representative of Nigeria to ECOWAS, chaired the meeting.
Jerome Boa, Director of External Relations at ECOWAS, set the agenda before Ambassador Nuhu delivered his opening remarks. Ambassador Nuhu described the Committee's mission as “a platform for exchanging ideas and developing strategies,” established in 2019 to support efficient operations within the Community’s institutions. He thanked the ECOWAS Commission and its President for their collaboration and emphasized the importance of the retreat's theme for ECOWAS's future.
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, addressed attendees via a virtual platform. He highlighted "the need for sustained commitment to strengthening relations with Member States," adding that “this retreat offers us a platform to reflect on practical solutions for maintaining engagement with the three Member States that have opted to withdraw.”
The retreat included presentations on regional security, economic growth, trade, and free movement within member states. Vice-President Damtien Tchintchibidja participated remotely and discussed enhancing regional integration through partnerships.
At the conclusion of discussions, Committee members are expected to submit a report to inform a proposal for presentation at an upcoming Summit scheduled for December 15 in Abuja.
