Liberian president urges global cooperation at UNGA summit

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. of Liberia has called for global collaboration to address economic challenges that hinder the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Speaking on September 22, 2024, at the Summit of the Future held alongside the United Nations General Assembly, President Boakai emphasized the need for collective action to tackle these issues.

In his address, President Boakai highlighted disparities noted in the Human Development Report and stressed overcoming inequalities and political divisions. He updated attendees on Liberia's efforts towards achieving SDGs, focusing on good governance, reducing waste and corruption, and effective resource utilization aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The summit's theme was “Transforming Global Governance and Turbocharging the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” The Liberian leader stated: “We need to address our common challenges together and overcome the obstacles that are holding back our progress.”

President Boakai also advocated for transforming global governance to expedite implementing the 2030 Agenda. He underscored a financial system that prioritizes liquidity and eases burdens on developing nations. He urged bold measures from the international community to alleviate economic pressures faced by vulnerable countries.
