On July 11, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, presented the general report on the state of implementation of the Community’s 2024 work programme to the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Nigeria. This presentation followed the opening of debates by the President of the Parliament, H.E. Mrs. Memouna-tou Ibrahima, in accordance with Article 32 of the Additional Act relating to the reinforcement of the prerogatives of the ECOWAS Parliament. The act stipulates that “At each ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament, the President of the Commission shall present a general report on the state of implementation of the Community’s work programme.”
The presentation aimed not only to comply with regulatory requirements but also to exchange and share recent regional developments with Community parliamentarians. The report covered activities within global, continental, and regional socio-economic, political, and security contexts that impact the Community directly and indirectly. It emphasized performance in key strategic areas such as regional peace, security, governance, economic integration, inclusive development, and activities involving both Parliament and the Community Court of Justice.
This session provided parliamentarians with an opportunity to monitor and oversee Community programmes' implementation. Representatives from all ECOWAS Member States attended alongside members from the ECOWAS Commission and partners.
In his address, President Touray highlighted significant progress in harmonizing education programmes, developing youth and sports activities, advancing energy and transport infrastructure, and supporting environmental initiatives and regional agricultural policy. He stated: “These initiatives promote economic growth, social stability, and regional cooperation in West Africa.”
The First Ordinary Session of the Sixth Legislature 2024 began on July 1 and will allow Community representatives to tackle various regional issues such as strengthening institutional capacities, promoting regional trade, and improving infrastructure for sustainable development within the ECOWAS region.
