Praia, May 28, 2024 – The Office of the Resident Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission in Cabo Verde hosted a cocktail reception to mark the 49th anniversary of the ECOWAS Commission. The event, held in Praia, brought together government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, members of parliament from ECOWAS and Cabo Verde, university professors, and various dignitaries to celebrate nearly five decades of regional integration and development efforts by ECOWAS.
Dr. Samuel Lamptey, the Resident Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission to Cabo Verde, delivered a keynote speech highlighting some significant milestones achieved by ECOWAS in fostering economic integration across West Africa. He emphasized the Commission’s pivotal role in promoting trade, peace, and security in the region. “Over the past 49 years,” Dr. Lamptey stated, “ECOWAS has made remarkable strides in uniting our member states through economic cooperation and collaborative development initiatives.”
Dr. Jorge Santos, Minister of Communities for Cabo Verde's Government, also addressed attendees. He lauded the Commission’s continuous efforts towards regional development and underscored the strong partnership between Cabo Verde and ECOWAS. Dr. Santos remarked that "the engagement of ECOWAS in our region has been instrumental in driving sustainable development." On behalf of his government, he emphasized collaborative efforts to further this partnership for West African communities' prosperity.
The celebration provided an opportunity for attendees to reflect on ECOWAS's achievements and discuss future initiatives aimed at enhancing regional cooperation.
