On May 10, 2024, Madame Massandjé TOURE-LITSE, the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture of ECOWAS, embarked on a field visit to the Mansakonko region in The Gambia. This visit was part of her participation in the annual meeting of the steering committee of the regional project “Global Forest Transformation for Populations and Climate: A Focus on West Africa,” which took place on May 7, 2024, in Banjul. The project is funded by Swedish Cooperation and implemented with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During her tour, TOURE-LITSE visited community initiatives resulting from the national pilot project “Basic Adaptation Interventions to the Effects of Climate Change (GRACE)”. This initiative is implemented by the NGO Freedom From Hunger Campaign in the Lower River region with support from the project.

The visit commenced with courtesy greetings to the Governor of Lower River Region. It provided an opportunity to observe first-hand the results of community mangrove restoration efforts in Sandeng and Jataba villages. The delegation also examined honey production as a means of improving local livelihoods.

In addition to these activities, participants visited areas undergoing assisted natural regeneration within community forests. They also inspected energy-saving devices such as improved cookstoves in Batelling village.
