The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will continue to support Nigeria in the introduction of nuclear power.
IAEA Director Yukiya Amano spoke with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari recently to discuss plans to open Nigeria’s first nuclear power plant by 2035.
Amano encouraged Nigeria to begin preparations on the nuclear front by developing comprehensive nuclear laws and strengthening the regulatory framework in the country.
Nuclear power, Amano noted, is a long-term commitment that will require strong leadership, and Nigeria will need to prepare for it by strengthening its human resources for construction.
IAEA examined Nigeria’s nuclear program potential twice during the summer of 2015. Its investigations revealed that Nigeria was consistent with IAEA safety standards as they relate to emergency preparedness and response framework; however, the country needs to continue to refine its policies on managing capacities, spent fuel and radioactive waste.
Amano also met with the ministers of Health, Power, Works and Housing and Science and Technology to discuss the potential of nuclear power within Nigeria.
Finally, Amano praised the collaboration between the IAEA and Nigeria.
