More than 400 individuals have come together to discuss the shea industry and its interconnectedness with food security, agriculture and sustainability Monday to Wednesday at the Global Shea Alliance Conference in Accra, Ghana.

The conference's theme is "Shea 2016: Enhancing Farm Value" and is also focused on farming approaches, gender equity, rural resilience and more. Speakers include the minister for Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, as well as the USAID West Africa Regional Mission Director Alex Deprez.

With the alliance celebrating its fifth anniversary and involvement with 390 members and 30 countries, including women's groups, suppliers, nongovernmental organizations and more, it is working to create an industry with sustainable and high-quality standards and promote an awareness of shea in cosmetics and food products.

Shea can have a great influence on climate-friendly agriculture and food security, which will be further discussed at the conference, as brands and experts participate in the event. Workshops will address packaging, labeling, financing and business planning, which will provide much-needed information for the more than 200 businesses owned by women who work in the shea industry.
