At the Global Platform for Sustainable Cities (GPSC), recently held during Singapore Urban Week, leaders from 11 countries came together to create a sustainability program for countries to receive funding of $1.5 billion from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
The World Bank was the coordinator of the event, which was further supported by developmental banks, UN organizations and think tanks.
The GPSC accomplishes its work by sharing data and ideas as well as solutions to many of the problems that urban cities in Senegal, South Africa, Cote D'Ivoire and Peru experience, to name a few.
GPSC is preparing for 2050, when more than 2 billion people are expected to reside in cities. Planing requires clean water and energy, transportation, means to combat climate change and more.
As a part of GEF, GSPC will establish a group of global ambassadors for urban sustainability to benefit the local and global scenes.
The World Bank as well as the African, Asian, South African and Inter-American Development Banks, the United Nations Environment Program, the UN Development Program and the UN Industrial Development Organization will work to put the plan into action.
