Ghana's new center to help citizens who want to migrate

Thanks to funding by the European Union, a Migration Information Center (MIC) has been established in Sunyani, which is located in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana.

With the presence of the MIC, officials and the Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council hope that those who are seeking to migrate will look first to the center for information. Lack of information is a major reason for illegal migration, which leads to other problems, according to Sylvia Lopez-Ekra, International Office of Migration (IOM) Ghana's chief of Mission.

"Empowering migrants with correct knowledge is one of the most effective ways to protect potential migrants from unnecessary harm and loss of life," Lopez-Ekra said.

The center will help migrants with the collection of all necessary paperwork and documentation, prior to relocating.

Due to a study conducted by the IOM, irregular migration is a daily occurrence in Ghana as individuals seek life in a new country. However, for many people, this means a dangerous trip across the Sahara desert.
