Routes Africa 2016 set for June 26-28 in Tenerife, Canary Islands

Tenerife Tourism Corp. and the government of the Canary Islands have collaborated to bring route development forum Routes Africa to the public June 26 to June 28.

The event will take place in Tenrife, the largest of the Canary Islands. The forum is in its 11th year and will see representatives from airlines, airports and tourism organizations gather with route development officials to discuss travel services offered to and from Africa.

The forum also receives backing from the European Union (EU); past forums have been instrumental in the development of trade agreements for many African nations, such as Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Cape Verde.

The event includes pre-scheduled meetings as well as an exhibition and conference.

 Attendees will hear information about a new cruise terminal in the Canary Islands' Santa Cruz Port, which is set for a September opening. A new terminal is also planned at the Tenrife South Airport.

“West Africa is an important trading partner for Tenerife due to its geographical position, and there is huge potential to develop more air service to the African continent," Katie Bland, director of routes for the Canary Islands, said. "Hosting Routes Africa will support Tenerife’s strategy to become an aviation hub connecting West Africa to Europe and North America. The team at Tenerife Tourism Corp. are hugely proactive in air service development and a key partner of Routes." 

Tenerife President Carlos Alonso called Routes Africa "an exciting opportunity for us to showcase our island to key aviation industry leaders from across the world as a business hub for Africa and a gateway to four continents.”
