The African Union adopted the African Space Policy and Strategy Sunday during their 26th ordinary session.
Developing an African space program is one of the major aspects of the AU Agenda 2036. After adopting the policy, the group requested that member states and organizations focus on raising awareness on the importance of space science and technology for Africa's socio-economic development.
The African Union also requested the establishment of a framework for implementing the policy, looking at establishing a legal framework for the program and the material and industry requirements as well.
The policy focuses on getting the member nations to begin work toward establishing the necessary institutions and capacities to create and store the necessary technology for a space program.
The African Union Space Working Group is also continuing to work on creating governing and implementation frameworks for the program and will be performing an audit on the use of space technology in Africa.
