The ECOWAS Commission marked International Francophone and French Language Day on May 8, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria. The event aimed to emphasize the significance of the French language as a tool for work, communication, and integration within the West African community. Attendees included Commission executives and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Nigeria and ECOWAS, notably from Guinea and Benin.

Mrs. Ekerebong Michael Akuboh, Acting Coordinator of Language Services and representative of the Director of Conferences and Protocol, highlighted the importance of French within ECOWAS. She stressed its central role in the organization's daily operations.

Mr. Seydou Kassory Bangoura, Director of Administration and General Services, spoke on behalf of the Commissioner for Internal Services. He noted that the day celebrates not only the French language but also its values, history, and solidarity. He emphasized preserving this language in a globalizing world to build an inclusive future where every voice is heard.

Mr. Bernard Koffi, Acting Director of Environment and Natural Resources representing the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, reaffirmed that French is crucial for work and cooperation within ECOWAS. He discussed Vision 2050's goal to promote peace, security, and social cohesion in the region.

Representing Benin's ambassador, Mr. Akossoun Sourou Alfred praised French's richness and its fundamental role in building a unified Africa focused on progress.

Tributes were paid to key figures in French-language literature from past decades such as Mariama Ba, Fatou Diome, Léopold Sédar Senghor among others.

The celebration also featured artistic performances and culinary presentations by Guinea and Benin with traditional dishes. Folk songs and dances by Beninese and Togolese communities concluded the event.

International Day of La Francophonie is celebrated every March 20th to honor the French language's cultural diversity. It promotes cooperation among member states under the Charter of La Francophonie adopted at Hanoi Summit in 1997 revised in Antananarivo in 2005.
