Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio recently welcomed Lieutenant General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, leader of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, during a working visit to Sierra Leone. The meeting highlighted the shared vision and commitment of both nations towards fostering unity and addressing African challenges.

President Bio, in his welcome address, emphasized the strong bonds between Sierra Leone and Sudan despite geographical distance. He stated, “As Africans, our colonial borders do not define us. We are united by our shared aspirations for peace, development, and prosperity for our people.”

Lieutenant General Al-Burhan expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received and noted that the visit reflects Sudan’s resolve to strengthen diplomatic ties with Sierra Leone. He said, “We have come to Sierra Leone to deepen our partnership and seek collaborative solutions for Sudan’s challenges.”

The leaders discussed topics such as peace and security in Sudan and Africa at large. They stressed the need for swift humanitarian access to address food insecurity and aid those affected by conflict. Both leaders emphasized civilian protection and accountability for violations of international humanitarian law.

Timothy Musa Kabba, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, addressed the impacts of ongoing conflict in Sudan. He remarked that it poses a significant challenge to political stability in both Sudan and Africa. Minister Kabba stated, “The protracted conflict in Sudan is not in the geostrategic interest of Africa,” highlighting a shared commitment to de-escalation through an inclusive process supported by international bodies.

Minister Kabba also noted the importance of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty while fostering cooperation with international partners. “The shared vision is clear: to prioritize peace, protect human rights, and advance sustainable solutions to Sudan’s challenges,” he added.

The visit reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Sierra Leone and Sudan. President Bio assured Lieutenant General Al-Burhan that Sierra Leone remains a steadfast partner in pursuing peace and development. He concluded by saying, “Consider Freetown a home for Sudan, as we work together to create a brighter future for our continent.”
