The West African Power Pool (WAPP) has appointed Mr. Abdoulaye DIA as its new Secretary General. This decision was ratified at the WAPP General Assembly in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, on November 29, 2024.
Mr. DIA is an electromechanical engineer who graduated from the École Supérieure Interafricaine d’Électricité in Bingerville, Côte d'Ivoire. His career reflects a commitment to African integration through his work in various multicultural and multinational environments. He has held leadership roles in the energy sector both nationally and internationally.
Before joining WAPP, Mr. DIA served in several key positions at the Société Nationale d’Électricité du Sénégal (SENELEC), including Director of Communication and IT, Director of Energy Transmission, and Secretary General. He also worked as Chief of Staff to the Minister of Petroleum and Energy of Senegal and chaired the Board of Directors for the Special Fund for the Support of the Electricity Sector in Senegal. Additionally, he led SEMAF under OMVS.
His experience with WAPP includes membership in the Engineering and Operations Committee (EOC), chairmanship of the "Dark Fiber" task force, and representation on SENELEC's Executive Board.
WAPP expressed confidence that Mr. DIA’s leadership will help address current challenges while enhancing regional cooperation for sustainable energy access across West Africa. The organization urges all partners to support Mr. DIA to ensure his success.
WAPP is a specialized ECOWAS institution focused on integrating national electricity systems into a unified regional market, aiming for reliable and affordable electricity supply for ECOWAS member states.
