As part of the week commemorating the 49th anniversary of ECOWAS, the ECOWAS Representation in Benin held the finals and small finals of the second edition of a competition for 'Geniuses in the Making' at the Idriss Deby ITNO Auditorium of the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC) on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

The competition aims to bring ECOWAS closer to its people, with particular emphasis on adolescents who represent the future of the Community. It specifically seeks to popularize ECOWAS activities among young people and strengthen their knowledge about the history, structure, functioning, and aspirations of the organization.

Four secondary schools from Atlantic and Littoral departments participated in this stage of the competition. Pahou and Saint Rita secondary schools competed in the final round, while Saint Bakita School Complex and Saint Augustine Secondary School faced off in the small final.

The event was chaired by Mr. Garba AyoubA, Director of Cabinet representing the Minister of Secondary and Technical Education and Vocational Training. The ceremony included welcome remarks from Professor Hygin Kakai, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law at UAC; speeches from Departmental Directors of Secondary Education for Atlantic and Littoral regions; and H.E. Ambassador Amadou DiongUE, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Benin.

In his opening remarks, Mr. AyoubA expressed gratitude towards ECOWAS for initiating an educationally valuable competition like 'Geniuses in The Making.' He congratulated Saint Rita’s College team on their victory in this edition and encouraged all participating teams while wishing continued success for future competitions.

The event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony following both final matches.
