The ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (ECGD), in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), launched on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, in Saly, Republic of Senegal, the second edition of the meeting of the regional coordination committees of its flagship programmes implemented in the 15 ECOWAS Member States.

This meeting aims to discuss the state of implementation of the programmes and marks the first stage in a series of activities supported financially and technically by USAID West Africa. USAID is a strategic partner in implementing ECGD’s programmes across Member States.

At the opening ceremony, the ECOWAS national office delivered a welcome address. The Director of ECGD recalled the Centre’s objective: creating an enabling environment for gender equality and empowering women and girls economically and socially. Specifically, ECGD aims to reposition itself as the agency responsible for implementing and monitoring ECOWAS gender policy.

The Director expressed special thanks to USAID for mobilising its team to support ECGD in organising this activity, along with its financial contribution.

In her opening speech, Professor Fatou SOW SARR, ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, highlighted ECGD's participatory and inclusive approach. She noted that involving all stakeholders in discussing programme implementation status allows capitalisation on good practices while identifying shortcomings at both Member State and ECOWAS levels. This approach aims to improve governance and transparency in technical and financial management.
