The ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC) is organizing the 2nd edition of the meeting of regional coordination committees for its flagship programs from June 4 to 8, 2024, in Saly – Portudal, Senegal. The event aims to share information on program implementation and formulate recommendations for improvement.

Key players and experts in education, health, and women’s entrepreneurship from ECOWAS Member States, the ECOWAS Commission, and affiliated agencies will discuss technical and financial management of EGDC’s programs. Focus areas include the Medical and Financial Support Programme for women and girls with obstetric fistula, the Support Programme for Young Girls in Technical and Vocational Training through Excellence Scholarships, and the Support Programme for Women in Agricultural, Fishery, and Handicraft Processing.

Since 2010, EGDC has prioritized health, education, and women’s entrepreneurship to promote gender equality and empower women economically and socially. However, implementation weaknesses have been noted at both Member State and ECOWAS levels. The coordination meeting will address these issues by discussing audit reports on scholarship programs, technical and financial management arrangements, and defining roles of various stakeholders including EGDC Focal Points, National Offices, and Permanent Representations.

Participants will include representatives from the Office of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Vice-President's Office of the ECOWAS Commission, Human Development and Social Affairs Department of the ECOWAS Commission; Legal Affairs Directorate; technical agencies such as RAAF and ECREEE; Trade and Transport Directorates; Regional Coordinating Committees for EGDC flagship programs; ECOWAS Permanent Representations; National Offices; GIABA; technical partners; financial partners; experts; and EGDC.

This meeting aims to establish stronger strategies to enhance implementation of EGDC’s flagship programs across Member States.
